FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What are the main differences between Thai curries and Indian curries?

1) Thai curries rely more on herbs such as kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, and galangal whereas Indian curries are dominated by dried spices such as turmeric, cumin and cardamom. As a result, their flavour profiles are generally different.

2) Thai curries use a lot more coconut milk and are thus more soup-like than Indian curries.

3) Thai curries utilize spices in paste form. This method generally leads to more enhanced flavours because the ingredients have had more time to mature together.

Do SmartEat products really have authentic Thai taste?

Definitely! When SmartEat first started, our products were sold only to domestic consumers in Thailand. In order to succeed, SmartEat food needed to taste authentic and satisfy the local taste buds. Today, we still maintain that authenticity.

What is a retort pouch?

A retort pouch is a specially laminated food package that is able to withstand high temperature. It has the shelf stability of metal cans, but also offers the nutrient values associated with frozen foods. It is also lightweight, flexible and has the strength to protect from leakage, puncture and outside contaminants.

Why use retort pouches instead of cans?

At SmartEat we want to produce truly delicious Thai food. While foods in metal cans can be produced at a much faster rate, foods in retort pouches can retain much better texture, aromas and flavours. This is because, when compared to cans, the retort pouches’ thinner profile allows for a shorter exposure to high-temperature sterilization.

Do SmartEat products contain preservatives?

No, we do not use any preservatives in our food.

How can SmartEat products remain shelf-stable?

Food spoils because it comes into contact with bacteria and other tiny microorganisms. By eliminating these pathogens, food can easily be kept for several years without spoiling.

At SmartEat, the elimination of pathogens follows a stringent process. It involves preparing the ingredients in a hygienic environment, sealing them inside the retort pouches, sterilizing the contents using a retort machine, and finishing up with quality control tests. As a result, all pathogens inside the pouches are eliminated and no new pathogens from outside can enter. With the absence of pathogens, SmartEat products are able to remain shelf-stable without the use of any preservatives.

What is the recommended storage method?

For optimal storage condition, please store the products in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. No refrigeration is required!

Are SmartEat products halal food?

Are SmartEat products Non-GMO?

Yes, SmartEat products are Non-GMO. We do not use any genetically modified ingredients.

What is rice bran oil?

Rice bran oil is edible oil extracted from the husk that surrounds the rice grain. It is naturally trans-fat free and has a mild flavour that will not make a dish taste funny. Its non-sticky and light qualities also help to reduce oil absorption during cooking (almost 20% less absorption when compared to other oils). Additionally, rice bran oil is heart-healthy, even more so than olive oil.

Are SmartEat products healthy? They are after all processed food.

The health concern over processed foods really centers around ultra-processed products (i.e. instant noodles, macaroni and cheese, bacon, burgers, some frozen dinner, cakes and cookies, sugary drinks, etc.) which have been chemically altered and tend to be high in sugar, artificial ingredients, refined carbohydrates, trans-fat, and possibly preservatives. These products offer little nutritional value and are a major contributor to obesity and illness worldwide.

SmartEat products, however, are far from being ultra-processed. Only natural ingredients are used. No chemicals or preservatives are added. While some nutrients may have been lost, due to sterilization, most of the nutrients remain well locked-in within the retort pouches. Our dishes are essentially similar to fresh soups prepared over a stove stop, but having that freshness captured for convenient consumption at a later date.  They are practically a healthy and safe source of food supply.
